Obituary of Weldon Alfred Schramm

Weldon Alfred Schramm passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, the 25th of June 2013 at the age of 96.

Weldon was born in Shiner, Texas, on the 26th of February 1917, the only child of Frieda and Alfred Schramm. He graduated from Shiner High School in 1935 as Valedictorian of his class. Upon graduation, Weldon attended, played in the Marching Owl Band (the original MOB!), and graduated from Rice Institute (Rice University) in 1939.

Weldon then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, joining the Marine Office of America, a broker and insurance underwriter to the fledging maritime and energy industry. Two days before Pearl Harbor, Weldon enlisted in the United States Army rising to the rank of Lieutenant during his service to his Country during World War II

On the 21st of September 1943, Weldon married the love of his life, Angelyn, to whom he was joyfully and blessedly married for 68 years. Weldon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He and Angelyn were "early purchasers" (1946) of a home in West University Place where they resided until 2010. At that time "Mimi" and "Opa" moved to Treemont Retirement Community in Houston, Texas. The entire family is thankful for the many courtesies and friendships extended to them by the whole staff.

He faithfully served his church, Grace Lutheran Church in Houston as a Vestryman, Treasurer, and Chairman of various Church Committees. Weldon was also a devoted employee of the Marine Office of America from 1939 until his retirement in 1986.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Angelyn and their son Roger Weldon Schramm, and is survived by his daughter, Sandra Lynn Thomas and her husband John; daughter-in-law Eleanor Barry Schramm; and son, Howard Krause Schramm and his wife Ann. In addition, surviving "Opa" are six grandchildren: Melanie Ann Maiona and her husband Marc, Phil Ray Magee IV and his wife Susan, William Roger Schramm, Robert Weldon Schramm, Caroline Schramm Rodgers and husband Will, Elizabeth Holland Schramm, and four great-grandchildren, Claire Angelyn Maiona, William Taylor Maiona, Grace Anne Magee, and Emma Rae Magee.

The family is to gather for a private interment at Shiner Cemetery in Shiner, Texas, where the Rev. Lura N. Groen, Pastor of Grace Lutheran church in Houston, is to officiate.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Weldon's name be directed to Grace Lutheran Church, 2515 Waugh Drive, Houston, TX, 77006.
