Faithful Reflection on Criminal Justice

In an effort to more fully understand the issues raised in the ELCA’s draft social statement on criminal justice, which may be found by clicking here, Grace is hosting a discussion Sunday, October 14, 4 - 6 p.m.

After a brief overview of the statement, Bishop Mike Rinehart will put criminal justice into a theological context. Then people intimately familiar with the criminal justice system, including a representative from the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition and activist Ray Hill, will offer their perspectives on four broad topics addressed in the statement:
1) inequalities in and resulting from the system,
2) reasons for the high rate of incarceration in the U.S,
3) policies that can decrease the size of the incarcerated population
4) how best to address juvenile offenders.
All will then be invited to participate in facilitated discussion.

Later that evening from 7-9 p.m., a screening of the TED talk by Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, will be held nearby at The Artery, 5401 Jackson. RSVP to the later event at info@hpjc.org
