A Child’s Countdown to Christmas

The Nativity Window
in Grace's Nave
Do you remember the excitement of the countdown to Christmas every year when you were a child?  Has that excitement and giddy anticipation been replaced with December’s adult stresses and worries and frustrations as the years have passed by?   Do you ever wish that you could regain that child-like sense of wonder at the coming of the Christ Child?  Well, we have very special plans for our Advent Wednesdays this year, and you’ll definitely want to reserve these dates on your calendar.

On the first three Wednesdays of Advent – November 30, December 7, and December 14, from 7 to 9 pm – we will begin the evening with a brief service which will be centered around the reading of a children’s Christmas story.  We will also share, of course, Scripture and prayers, and as a special treat will even sing Christmas songs!  (All of you old Lutherans out there will know how unusual this last one is in Advent.)

After the service, we will eat a delicious soup supper together and discuss subjects like, “What is your favorite Christmas memory?” and “How did your family prepare for Christmas when you were a child?” and “What gift do you plan to bring to the Christ Child this year?”  Then, we will do arts and crafts, making gifts for needy children and their families, all while eating Christmas cookies and imbibing traditional drinks like wassail, eggnog, and mulled cider.

Doesn’t that sound like fun?  Come on – you know your inner child is doing a Charlie Brown dance right now!

(On the fourth Wednesday of Advent, by the way, the 21st, we will shift gears and present a very special program for the evening, but that’s being kept a secret until next month’s newsletter.  Rest assured, however, that if we’re planning on such fun for the first three Wednesdays of Advent, the final week will top the whole season!)

So, don’t be a Grinch.  Listen to your excited inner child, and join us for our own Gracian take on “A Child’s Countdown to Christmas” on Wednesdays at 7 pm beginning on November 30.

And bring your friends – you’ll all be glad you did!!
