Christ the King hosts Mühlenberg Exhibit

Church historian Timothy Wengert of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia will introduce a new exhibit coming to Houston on Sunday, February 27, at 4:00 p.m. in the narthex of Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Boulevard in the Village.

The exhibit celebrates the importance of Henry Melchior Mühlenberg (1711-1787), clergyman and patriarch of Lutherans in North America. Mühlenberg played a major role in not only the religious life but also the political life of colonial America, the Revolutionary War and the founding of the federal republic. Mühlenberg is widely recognized as the most influential German-American cultural figure in 18th century America. He recorded his daily activities in precise detail in journals and correspondence to friends in the colonies and Europe.

Following the presentation, refreshments will be served in the courtyard. The closest contemporary of Mühlenberg will be the “Samuel Adams” served in honor of our Lutheran patriot.

Dr. Wengert is the "Ministerium of Pennsylvania Professor" at our ELCA seminary in Philadelphia. The traveling exhibit will be at Christ the King Church February 27 through March 21. The exhibit marks the tercentenary of Mühlenberg's birth in 1711.
